Silicon India team interviewed Dan Horiba, Senior Corporate Officer, HORIBA, Ltd., Japan and President, HORIBA STEC, Co., Ltd., who was recently in India for customer connect and the inauguration of the MFC Production facility at HORIBA center in Pune. Tell us in detail about The HORIBA Group and its business line.
DH: HORIBA Group, a 70-year multi national organization, made up of 49 companies in 28 countries, is a leading company that provides analytical and measurement systems throughout the world. Our business is evolving in the markets of Automotive, Process and Environmental Instruments, Medical Diagnostics, Semiconductors and Scientific Instruments.

With the strength of HORIBA’s core technologies and the determination of our employees, HORIBA is now developing products and total solutions for the three major fields of Bio & Healthcare, Energy & Environment and Materials & Semiconductors.

HORIBA is celebrating its 70th anniversary in 2023, how has this journey been?
DH: HORIBA Group is a brainchild of our founder Late Dr. Masao Horiba, who while a student at Kyoto Universityin Japan, founded HORIBA Radio Laboratory in 1945 which was later transformed into HORIBA, Ltd., in 1953. The glass electrode pH meter, today sold by the name of the LAQUA series, was the first successful product of HORIBA during our initial days of establishment.

HORIBA has become the global leader in measurement and analytical solutions under the visionary leadership of Atsushi Horiba, who followed in the footsteps of the Late Dr. Masao Horiba. Many world-renowned companies joined HORIBA like JobinYvon and ABX from France, SPEX and Dilor from the US, FuelCon from Germany and MIRA from the UK, making HORIBA more robust and extensive.

Can you throw some light on how HORIBA is a total solution provider for Semi-ecosystem?
DH: HORIBA supports the total semiconductor manufacturing process with a wide range of product lines from material evaluation to manufacturing process to utility products. We have a predominant market share of more than 60 percent for Mass Flow
Controllers(MFC) and 80 percent for Chemical Concentration Monitors: In company research. With our focus set clearly on the overall process, we have developed a line-up of analytical equipment, fluid control and measuring systems tailored to every stage of the semiconductor manufacturing process in response to stringent quality control requirements. In all stages, from materials evaluation through to final inspection, our products help maintain high efficiency in the manufacture of leading-edge electronics devices. Our products include Mass Flow Controllers and Mass Flow Meters including High-Temperature Mass Flow and Liquid Mass Flow. Liquid Automatic Refill Systems, Liquid Vaporizers, Mixed Injection Systems and Gas Concentration Monitors.

While offering your portfolio of Semiconductor products & services to ease customers’ experiences how do you ensure to stand unique when compared to that of your competitors’? Explain your USP.

DH: HORIBA group provides an extensive array of instruments and systems for applications ranging from automotive R&D, process and environmental monitoring, in-vitro medical diagnostics, semiconductor manufacturing and metrology, to a broad range of scientific R&D and QC measurements. We, therefore, have a unique matrix of product lines from the initial R&D to product development to testing to QC check to emissions monitoring of any industrial market. This makes us a unique total solution provider for markets like lab-grown diamond, optical fibers, solar module and semiconductor chip.

Japanese conglomerate expands its wings in India, inaugurated the Semiconductor Mass Flow Controller (MFC) Production facility at HORIBA India Technical Center, Pune


Proven quality and trustworthy performance have established widespread confidence in the HORIBA Brand. What are your expansion plans for HORIBA’s MFC repair, calibration and production facility?
DH: To cater to the increasing demand for HORIBA’s signature product lineMass Flow Controller, which finds its application in the markets, we started with the in-house repair and calibration of these MFCs at the beginning of 2023 at HORIBA center in Pune. Within a time span of 6 months, this facility has now been upgraded to a full-fledged repair, calibration and production facility for MFCs. We are determined to expand our production facility to support MFC manufacturing for the different sectors of the Indian market. This shall support the Make in India initiative, create more job opportunities and support the socio-economic development of India.

Tell us about your other investments in India.
DH: HORIBA believes in Together We Grow. In the notion of Make in India and the push for industrial sectors contributing significantly to the GDP of India, HORIBA has invested in the following sites for the economic development of society. Medical reagent manufacturing facility at Haridwar since 2013 to support the growing demand for the quick delivery of reagents for the Indian healthcare sector.

Region’s largest Hematology Reagent manufacturing facility at Nagpur spread across an area of 12 acres. This facility comprises manufacturing, refurbishment, a central warehouse facility, an International Training Center, HORIBA Experience Zone and HORIBA India Technical Institute (HITI). We have plans to start the manufacturing of Medical equipment at this facility in the near future.

HORIBA India Technical Center, Pune which houses a demonstration base for emission measurement systems, advanced analytical instruments, and an indigenized customization facility for the Automotive, Process and Environmental and Semiconductor product line respectively. This state-of-the-art facility is certified with ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015, ISO 45001:2018 and NABL ISO IEC 17025:2005 accreditation
